I am extremely pleased to be able to present to you this choice for visiting an exciting area of the world—a culture-filled ‘enrichment voyage’ (with Bishop Desmond Tutu**). This voyage harkens back to the olden days on the ss Universe Explorer, with:

  • a smaller ship, thus a more intimate, friendly experience
  • a full enrichment program with leading artists, authors, academics, scientists [biology (including whales and marine mammals), anthropology, geology, art history, literature and film, organizational development, Latin American literature, Medieval European culture, human development...]
  • fellow voyagers interested (in addition to having a great, fun time!) in the history, culture, biology, geology, art and literature of the countries and regions visited
  • a wonderful panoply of entertainers: pianists, guitarist, swing dancers, vocalists, vocal ensemble...
  • a huge number of ports (each with 10–12 hours to spend on shore exploring and enjoying the country)
  • one overnight in port (thus, 2 days) in Guatemala
  • a broad selection of optional Field Programs for first-hand discovery and exploration in every port
  • a rich variety of shipboard activities, from art workshops to fitness classes to dancing to trivia contests to workshops on photo tips & techniques, photo editing, transferring and organizing your pictures

This special voyage is aboard Semester at Sea’s new (built 2002 by Blohm & Voss shipbuilders of Germany), modern, 25,000 ton MV Explorer, with 7 decks, pool & sundeck, fitness center, an 8000 volume library, computer lab, free WI-FI internet, spa and salon.

**IMPORTANT NOTES:
  1. Bishop Tutu will be on board from Dec. 15 to Dec. 20 or 21 and will be giving talks during his stay on board with his fellow passengers
  2. This voyage will be repeated April 27–May 18, 2011 (but without Bishop Tutu), for those of you for whom this December trip is too short notice
  3. Port charges and fees: $280 per person (for the 20-day trip)
  4. For more information, trip details, itinerary, cabin rates and a greater sense of this rich journey, you can go to the Semester at Sea website: http://www.semesteratsea.org/—or you can go directly to the December–January Voyage pages at: http://www.semesteratsea.org/voyages/enrichment-voyages/december-2010.php
Travel with a difference. For over 33 years of world travel our reputation for adding our own very special blend of familial informality to international travel has become well established. We use music and dance to break the ice, to make connections and meet people on a level most travelers don't experience—to create an atmosphere of friendship and exploration that often leads to quite unusual happenings. With our personal contact with locals on an informal basis, using music and dance to cross the barriers of culture and language, we get a more intimate and rich experience of the people, their culture, their life, their history. We have music and dance sessions both in our group and with others. Remember, you decidedly do not need to be a folk dancer or musician to enjoy this trip to the fullest. For example, anytime you're not participating, you can interact with the local folk who are gathered around watching, asking questions, etc. This is often one of the more rewarding aspects of our local 'get-togethers'.
